NO. Although they offer to, technically they cannot because they are not the “Named Insured” on the policy. Only the “Named Insured” on the policy can make changes. If we get calls from dealers we will verify with the client that they have in fact, traded in or purchased a new car. Several people rely on the dealers to do so, but if they forget then it will cause a problem. Sometimes PennDOT does not catch the issue as well. We highly advise that you add the vehicle to your policy yourself. If you do let the dealer make these calls for you, double check with your carrier. You only have automatic coverage for a certain amount of days, and each company can differ. If you get behind the wheel and cause an accident and your car is not listed after the automatic coverage is discontinued, there is no coverage. You would be responsible for all damages out of pocket. A way to avoid this happening is to regularly check that your ID Card is current and accurate inside your car. You can call us here at James L Smith Insurance and we can send it to you by email, fax or mail.
